Reviving an old classic

From time to time I get into a conversation about an old game that I used to play when I was a kid. Hell, I even still own a PS1, a Gameboy Color and a Nokia 3310 just so I can play those games that filled me with awe when I was a kid.

GameBoy was a cool toy to have

Some games do get remakes that breathe life into something I thought was missing; Crash Team Racing just came out with a remake and you can play a lot of old-school NES-era games online nowadays.

But what would be a better tribute to a great game lost in the void of time than to try and create the same game from scratch? Imitation is still the greatest form of flattery, right?

The world of different balls

Kula World (or as some may know it, Roll Away or KulaQuest) was one of the best PS1 era puzzle games. The game has quite original gameplay, and as far as I remember it was a real brain-teaser for a 10-year-old me.

The game's main idea is simple: You're a ball that jumps, turns and rolls forward. So what's the catch? In specific places you can change the direction of the gravity.

This mechanic made the game resemble more of a Rubik's cube where you'll need to rethink how you model the world in your head. This was, and still is, both educative and entertaining.

A prototype is worth a thousand words

So a few hours later, this is what we have: A game with similar mechanics, but with less features and only five levels. Enjoy!
